The craft was built by General Mills' Electronics Group in the same factory used to manufacture breakfast cereal-producing machinery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Named both for the famous cartoon chipmunk and its proponent Allyn Vine Scientists in the submersible DSV Alvin at a depth of 3,088 metres at the Alaskan continental margin in the Gulf of Alaska collected a spatangoid urchin, Cystochinus loveni, about 5 cm diameter, which was wearing a cloak consisting of over 1,000 protists and other creatures, including 245 living monothalameans, mainly Psammina species, each 3–6 mm.

Alvin enables in-situ data collection and observation by two scientists to depths reaching 4,500 meters, during dives lasting up to ten hours. The other two spheres originally fabricated for the Alvin were later used for the Navy's Turtle (DSV-3) and her sister ship Sea Cliff (DSV-4), built to a design similar to the Alvin. Turtle has video and still cameras, two six-function hydraulic manipulators, and four large view ports. DSV-4 is an Alvin-class deep submergence vehicle (DSV), a sister ship to Turtle, Alvin.
